CNN Money’s Retirement Calculator
I came across this great retirement calculator at CNN Money’s website.
This is a pretty advanced calculator. It can give you a pretty specific outlook on you and your spouse’s retirement plans. It can even calculate the % chance you will be able to reach your goal and show you what you need to adjust to reach your goals. I entered in all of my information and was a little surprised to see that I pretty much am not saving enough money to reach my goals.
I need to save more money basically. I am going to be short when I retire based on the current amount I am saving these days. It also helps if your company matches your contributions. Unfortunately my company doesn’t match a whole lot so I will have to save more.
I am surprised how many people do not care about their financial future in America. Lots of people I talked to at my work don’t even have 401k’s. When I ask them why, they always tell me, "I can die at anytime, why would I want to save?" or "I don’t know anything about investing."
These are uneccessary excuses. Each employee should take their fair share and do their fair part. It is what working is all about!

This retirement calculator does not contain an adjustment for the valuation level that applies on the day thee retirement begins. That is a serious problem. The historical stock-return data shows that this is the most important of the factors determining whether a retirement plan succeeds in the long term or not.

Rob, thanks for this info. I read your site and came across the The Great Safe Withdrawal Rate Debate. I am reading it now and trying to understand it. It sounds interesting. It must be something if it keeps getting banned from investing boards.
