How to Start a Blog to Make Online Revenue Part 2: Content and Traffic

Content is King.

Ok.  So you made it past the initiation.  I hope it wasn’t too bad for you and you don’t feel to neglected by the tone of the post.  No?  Thats Great!  So by now you should have a nice little simple Blogger blog setup with an RSS feed attached.  You should have, at the very least, a few posts describing the content of the blog.  Your content should be clear and easy to read.  You should post regularly and try to get at least one post for each topic you plan to cover with this blog.  Don’t be afraid to be honest in your content because people will respect you more if they no you are not just trying to sell them something in every post.  Establish your voice and style.

Driving in Traffic Sucks!  But Driving Traffic To Your Blog Does Not.

Content is great but it is worthless without people to read it.  That is why you need to do some work to create traffic to your new blog.  Before you do you should setup Google Analytics on your blog in order to monitor your traffic.  That way you will be able to see the results of the things you try.  There are many easy ways to get traffic to your blog.  Below is a list of things that I have tried and have seen results.

Commenting - You should subscribe to other blogs related to your blog to see what people are talking about.  You will learn a lot from other people and try to add value to their content by adding links to your posts that are related.  These links are important for your own ranking in google as well.  Introduce yourself to people and try to help them.  You can start with this blog by leaving a comment.

Join Social Networks - Social networks are important because they can provide more link backs to your site and help you connect with people.  I use the sites listed below.  I linked each one to my profiles on each of the sites.  Check them out.

There are many more but these are the ones I follow for now.  I think Technorati is probably one of the most important ones you can join as a blogger.  It is the most popular blog directory site out there.  You should get really involved on this site to build up authority and links.

Submit To Article Directories - The two directories I use are Article Marketer and Ezine Articles.  They are both great sites that you can submit articles to for free.  People will come across these articles and ultimately find your blog in the process.

Search Engine Traffic - You will get visitors from searches if your site is ranked decent in search engines.  The 3 major ones you will need to get indexed in are Yahoo, MSN and Google.  An easy way to get indexed is to submit a sitemap to each engine.  You can submit your RSS feed as a sitemap to google using Google Webmaster Tools.

 Submit To Blog Directories

There are literally hundreds of blog directories.  You should submit your blog to many of them.  Some require reciprocal links and others don’t.  Try them all out.  Below are a list of a few blog directories I submitted this blog to.

Web Hosting Blogs - BlogCatalog Blog Directory
Blog Dirs
Blog Hints

There are many, many directories out there and it would behoove you to submit to them all.  This of course takes a lot of time but it is worth it.  Just search google for “blog directory” and go down the list and submit to them all.

Creating traffic takes a long time and can be tedious but is necessary and worth the work.  There are billions of web pages out there and you must make yours standout.  To do that takes determination and hard work.  Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this post.

Stay tuned for part 3 where we will talk about SEO.
