How to Start a Blog to Make Online Revenue Part 1: Initiation
- 0 Comments
I am assuming that you already have a decent amount of knowledge about the web, signing up for stuff, and what a blog is. If this is not the case please go learn and come back.
This is the first part to a series of posts to show you a FREE and very basic way to getting started blogging. Don’t forget to Subscribing to my RSS Feed so that you don’t miss a post. I will start off simply with the initial setup and go into monetizing it later. Keep in mind mind these posts are just to help you get started into blogging, and a lot of details will be left out. Don’t worry I will remember to keep the important details in.
Why this guide is so vague: I truly believe to be good at something you must experience it for yourself and figuring stuff out on your own will make you a true expert. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
Here is a breakdown of what you will need:
- Blog Topic and Title
- Blog
- RSS Feed
- Sitemap
A Blog Name and Purpose
The first thing you will need to do is decide what your blog will be about. Then you will need to come up with a title and domain name. The important thing to remember is that your blog should be about something that you know a lot about. The reason for that is so that you will be able to write often. You want to try to come up with a domain name that matches the content of the blog. Once you have that then read the next paragraph.
Easiest Way to Create a Blog
Blogger is probably the most easiest to use and is free. I recommend using this first to learn. You can be up and running with a blog in no time with Blogger. This platform is owned by Google and is what I started my first blog with. Just go to the site and follow the simple steps to create your first blog. Do that now and come back here after you chose your template.
Done? Good. Now write a few posts about your blog and what you plan to do with it. Make sure to create some links to your home page on each post. Now read the next paragraph.
Setting Up an RSS Feed
This is very important. RSS feeds are what keeps your readers informed when you post new stuff. It sends them the post right into their email box. To do this you simply use another free, Google owned site, called Feedburner. Go there now and setup a account. Then come back here when you are done.
Done? Good. Now go back to your blog settings and enter the feedburner url you got from feedburner. Login to feedburner and click on feed details to see it.
Setup Google Webmaster Tools and Submit a Sitemap
This is a very fast way to get your blog indexed on googles search engine. You go to Google Webmaster Tools and sign in and submit your site url. Once you figure out how to do that then submit a sitemap. You can just submit your RSS feed as the sitemap by using feeds/posts/full as the sitemap. This can be a little tricky but keep at it and you will figure it out.
Remember blogging takes determination. You will only be good at it if you are not willing to put in the work. I wrote the first post vague and kind of frustrating on purpose. It is to see if you have the determination to be a blogger. If you manage to complete the steps mentioned in this post then you are on the right path to becoming a good blogger. Again, this is basically a practice blog to learn with so don’t be afraid to try things and fail.
Stay tuned for the next posts where we will go into more detail on tweaking your blog, creating traffic, inducting yourself into the blogosphere, etc.
